Stick Daring’ from Lewes, sailed the wrong way round Britain in a £50 laser in 76 days

19th January – Neil Peters aka ‘Stick Daring’

An ordinary man became a real-life super hero to circumnavigate the whole of Britain in a tiny boat

In the winter of 2019 before anyone had heard of Covid, Neil was a busy man selling renovated doors from his workshop in Newhaven. But he dreamed of something more. When his friend Jeff decided to move from Eastbourne to Inverness, Neil decided he would visit him – not by car, but by sailing an ancient 13ft laser dinghy he’d dragged out of the mud. Once there he carried on and just over 76 days later, he’d successfully circumnavigate the entire coastline of Britain without support boat or assistance and relying on his own resourcefulness and imagination to survive.

The Adventures of Stick Daring has just been released in softback and charts this very uplifting story and often humorous story, as he tackles challenge after challenge on the near impossible task he gave himself. Sailing against the prevailing winds, Neil is the first man to have made this extraordinary voyage, single-handedly negotiating an HMS Warship on firing exercise, a highly protective colony of seals, fields of towering wind turbines, immense Scottish tankers and all the while being mindful of the many dangers of our tidal waters and changeable weather systems.

Yanaelle with her “Diagonal” at The Towner Gallery, Eastbourne in October

26th January – Yanaëlle Thiran

Contemporary Dancer, Teacher and Choreographer who has moved to East Sussex.

An inspiring evening with talk and performance by Contemporary Choreographer and Dance Teacher, Yanaëlle Thiran,  who is originally from Belgium. Yanaëlle recently completed ‘the Performance Path’ walking dance event in her home town of Eastbourne supported by Arts Council England and East Sussex Arts Partnership. This was a unique experience for local residents and was Yanaelle’s creative acknowledgment to the landmarks (Towner Gallery, the beach, a bench on the Prom, the Italian Gardens) and people of her chosen home here in East Sussex.

Yanaëlle’s unique curiosity for movement, people and places make her a wonderful presenter and she draws on video, speech and performance to bring you a delightful evening of entertainment.

You don’t have to be a dancer or even to have ever watched contemporary dance to be part of this evening. Just some with an open heart and let Yanaëlle’s natural charm help open your senses.
